Some only move their Koi when the seasons change, others bring their fish to shows all over the country. At the Koi shows, the fish are placed into large viewing bowls, which are usually supplied by the owner, where they are judged on body conformation, color and even personality. Most collectors use whatever plastic or fiberglass tub they can get their hands on. Very often, the tubs that the hobbyists use will have blisters or weld lines, which can damage the fish. "Some Koi are worth a lot of money." said Mike Swanson, owner of Koi Acres. "Others have a huge amount of sentimental value. Damage from handling equipment is unacceptable."<br /><br />The owners of Koi Acres decided to have their own bowl manufactured after scrutinizing several options that were out on the market. Since they deal with the manufacturer directly, they have plenty of control over the fabrication quality and the price. The Champion Koi Bowl is made from polyethylene plastic and has a completely smooth interior surface. Koi pond hobbyists from around the Midwest will bring their fish to the show to be judged. Dozens of tanks will be set up to house the fish. Some Koi on display will be almost three feet in length and can be worth thousands of dollars. The first Koi shows were held in Japan decades ago, with different prizes going to the owners of the most colorful fish. The trend spread throughout Asia, North America and Europe within the last 40 years.<br /><br />Water garden vendors will also be present at the show. If you are looking to acquire a Koi fish, there will be hundreds to choose from. They will also have products and ideas for all types of pond projects. Koi Acres will showcase all of the filtration equipment needed to keep a Koi pond clean. Their booth will be stocked with the latest in Koi pond tech, including the new electronic Sensafe Exact® 7+ Pond Test Kit.<br /><br />The Koi come in a wide variety of colors including red, white, black, yellow, blue or even green. Mike Swanson of Koi Acres is giving a presentation on the different varieties of the fish in one of the many seminars at the event.<br /><br />Admission is free.
